My first degree was a BA(Hons) in History and English from the University of Kent in 1970.
I trained in acupuncture in the UK for three years at the International College of Oriental Medicine, graduating with a BAc in 1981. In 1984-5 I studied at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital in Nanjing, China. I revisited Nanjing for further clinical studies in 1987, and in 1992, when I spent five weeks intensively studying Qigong and Taiji.
Herbal patent medicine
After study in China and the UK, I have used Chinese patent remedies for over 25 years. In 2006 I completed a one year postgraduate clinical training in the use of Chinese patent herbal remedies. I now use herbal and mushroom based food supplements to complement acupuncture treatment.
Continuing professional development
To keep abreast of new developments, I engage in an ongoing process of education and research: as a subscriber to medical journals and online news services; by atttendance at seminars and conferences; and by participation in online 'webinars'. I am also an avid collector of textbooks on different aspects of Chinese medicine.
